Session Description
We are excited to bring our Art. You. Powerful. program back for another summer! Art. You. Powerful. will provide students with a unique experience of self-discovery by providing a truly open and creative space in which students are free to explore. This summer we're offering more in-depth options for creative expression including photography, sound, and light! Art. You. Powerful. is open to all students, including anyone who has not yet taken an Art. You. Powerful. class, regardless of school affiliation or home address.
Throughout the week, students will be immersed in as many aspects of the creative process as possible. Mindfulness practices, movement, reflection, storytelling, play, writing, painting, sculpture, drawing, music, and immersion in nature will be used to encourage exploration and self-expression. Students have agency over what they create and are encouraged to use their imagination to go beyond what they think is possible.
By the end of the week, students will have become powerful, mindful creators, able to use multiple languages to express themselves. They will not only experience their own inner power, but also their collective power as a group.
Each session is guided by a theme. The theme is used as the starting point for reflective discussion and creative expression. Though the conversations vary, all Art. You. Powerful. sessions are similar in structure and offer the same opportunities for creativity.
Sessions will be held at Mary A. White Elementary School in Grand Haven, MI from June 3 - August 2 (excluding the week of July 1). Sessions that run August 5 - 16 will be held at Into the Woods retreat center in Grand Haven. Morning sessions (8 - 11am) and afternoon sessions (12 - 3pm) are available for grades 1-12.
All sessions are led by professionals Allison Paradise and Connor Maliesky. More information about them can be found here.

What People Are Saying
Students
'I totally LOVED IT!'
'Awesome'
'I felt powerful. I felt happiness. I felt confident. I felt great'
'I felt great and powerful'
'Very fun! Made new friends and got closer to the ones I already had. It gave me a chance to really find out just how creative I could be and it let us all think about things more and talk about them. There were tons of options for things to do, and it helped me discover new interests (for example, I love making masks now). You can speak about anything here, we all feel comfortable talking to each other about so many things. This club helped with my mental health, helped me discover new things about myself, and helped me to become more social. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I hope others get to come here too.'
Parents
'Our son has participated for several weeks and looks forward to it daily. Connor and Allison are excellent - I highly recommend their offerings for any family! We are so lucky to have this available for our kids!'
'My daughter was so excited and was up and eager to leave and when she came home she would talk a million miles a minute on what she did, who she hung out with and wanted to show me all her art. Then would ask when can she do it again.'
'I just wanted to send a follow up email on our experience with the team that put together this amazing opportunity for my daughter. I truly feel it did really help her come out of her shell, she made more friends, got to do what she loves and wants to know when she can do it again. The fact that the children got to express themselves in a safe and loving environment in a smaller group setting was wonderful. We both loved that it gave her an opportunity to do something extra special on her summer break.'

Have a Question? (FAQ)
What makes The Epicenter's Art. You. Powerful. program different from other summer camp offerings?
The Epicenter's summer programs are intentionally designed to benefit the mental health and wellbeing of your child. Using guided reflective questions and artistic self-expression, we provide space for children to work through the life situations that arise at their respective ages. Children who attend our programs experience increased confidence and increased connection with themselves and their peers. Older children experience less anxiety and stress.
All sessions are led by a Harvard- and Brown-educated neuroscientist and a former mechanical engineer. Collectively, they bring years of experience in neuroscience, consciousness research, art installation design, environmental exploration, teaching, and introspective program development to Art. You. Powerful. You can read more about them here.
What types of art do you offer students?
Students are encouraged to experiment with as many different types of art as they like. We offer opportunities to explore through movement / dance, music, photography, paint (acrylic and watercolor), unfired clay, markers, colored pencils, sewing (grades 5+), and mixed media. If there is a modality a child would like to try that we do not already have, we do our best to acquire the necessary materials.
If I am registering multiple children, do I need to fill out multiple registration forms?
Registration forms are specific to the two-year grade groupings for each session (see More Information and Registration section above). If you are registering multiple children who are in the same grade grouping (e.g., 1st and 2nd, or 5th and 6th) you can use the same form. If you are registering children who are not in the same grade grouping (e.g. a 1st grader and a 3rd grader) you will need to complete one registration form for for each child.
Can my child participate in multiple sessions?
Yes! Each of the four sessions offered throughout the summer for each grade group will vary in content. If your child enjoyed the first session they attended, we would love to have them back for another!
Can my child register for sessions outside of their grade level?
There is flexibility in sessions to accommodate students a year above or below the listed grade levels. For example, a student entering into 5th grade may attend either the grades 3-4 sessions or the grades 5-6 sessions. A student entering into 6th grade may attend the 5-6 sessions or the 7-8 sessions.
Is Art. You. Powerful. II open to all students?
Yes! Our summer program is open to all students, regardless of whether your child(ren) participated in Art. You. Powerful. last summer or during the school year, and regardless of where you live or where your child attends school. We welcome all students!
What should my child bring to class each day?
Please pack a water bottle and any snacks your child might want. We'll provide some snacks as well, we've just noticed that it's helpful for kids to bring food they know they like. It's also important that your child wear clothes that they can get dirty and/or get paint on. We let students use acrylic paint, which does not wash out of most fabrics. Although we provide aprons for them to use, paint often manages to work its way onto their clothes. We're also outside every day and clothes tend to get dirty when we walk in the woods.
Are scholarships available?
Limited need-based scholarships are available. Please email us to inquire about scholarships.
What if my child has special needs?
In most cases, we are able to accommodate children with special needs. The class can be loud at times and students are often creating with their hands; if your child requires only quiet environments or is unable to participate in art or other classes at school, please email us so we can discuss whether this program is the best choice for them.
What is your refund policy?
In general, we do not give refunds. However, on a case-by-case basis, we do give credit towards another session should your child not be able to participate in the one they signed up for. Please email us if you need to cancel your registration.
